The Spirit Glyph

article by Ben Lincoln

Raziel would originally have discovered not six, but seven Glyphs in addition to starting with the Shift Glyph. The Eighth and final entry in the ring menu was the Spirit Glyph - the counterpart of the deleted Spirit Reaver (see The Elemental Reavers).

As with much of the material which was cut from Soul Reaver, the Spirit Glyph is described in issue 19 of PSM (March 1999):

[The Spirit Glyph] creates a localized vortex of soul-sucking energy, tearing the souls out of any enemies within a prescribed radius. The souls are magnetized directly into Raziel, replenishing his health energy.

Prototype versions of the game from early 1999 include an unfinished version of this Glyph ability, as well as The Spirit Glyph Area. It creates an expanding ring of green light when used.

Video and still imagery from very early versions of Soul Reaver also contains the full ring menu, with the Spirit Glyph symbol being a spiral much like the ones in the Abyss and Raziel's own health meter.

The Deleted Forges, Reavers, and the Spirit Glyph video includes footage of this ability.
