Early Chronoplast Videos

article by Ben Lincoln

Multiple early versions of the "visions of the past and future" videos from the Chronoplast area of Soul Reaver have been recovered from prerelease builds of the game (see Alpha and Beta Versions).

Two major revisions of the early videos are available for download at the end of this article.

The videos present in this version of the game are extremely rough cuts. They feature excess leading and trailing footage, and were possibly recorded by pointing a video camera at a screen displaying the game. The starfield effect present in later versions of the videos is completely missing, and most of the eerie sound effects have not been added.

Raziel obtains the red-and-black Reaver when he kills Ariel, instead of the brilliant blade that would appear in later versions.

In the depiction of Kain and Raziel's battle at the Pillars, the Soul Reaver sword is missing from Kain's hands, making it appear that he is miming attacking Raziel.

The videos used in this version are much closer to those in the final release, but there are some notable differences. For example, in the shot of Raziel at the top of the Silenced Cathedral, he is wielding a red-and-white Reaver instead of red-and-black. It is unclear if this is the Fire Reaver, or a modified version of The Amplified Reaver.
