German Special Editions

Germany appears to be the most successful territory for Legacy of Kain - particularly in regards to the PC versions of the games. In addition to being the only country where a Legacy of Kain ashtray was developed (see Marketing Material), it is also the only place on Earth where the standard PC releases of Soul Reaver 2 and Defiance were supplemented by special editions.

The first of these was the Collectors Value DVD-ROM which included the PC versions of both Soul Reaver games, the Soul Reaver 2 soundtrack in DVD-Audio format, high-resolution bonus artwork, and other bonuses. To date, this is still the only Kain release for the PC on DVD-ROM. The inclusion of the bonus material in the space afforded by the format seems a clear indication that if PC users had embraced it earlier, those versions of Soul Reaver 2 and Defiance would not have been missing the behind-the-scenes videos.

The artwork from the DVD-ROM can be viewed at the end of this article. The "thrall_concept1" file included on the DVD has an incorrect pixel aspect ratio and will not be displayed correctly by most image viewers. It has been corrected for its inclusion here.

The Special Edition of Defiance did not include extra material beyond the standard PC release, but had a second DVD case which contained install CDs for Soul Reaver 2 and Blood Omen 2. The manual for Defiance is also printed in full colour.

Non-German fans who are interested in obtaining either of these releases should be aware that they feature German dialogue only.
