HMCS Bitter

information by VorteX, Rusminin and Divine Shadow, article by Ben Lincoln

In February 2010, Russian fans of the Legacy of Kain series were investigating Blood Omen in-depth in order to further their project to recreate the game in 3D (Blood Omnicide) and stumbled across a secret area in Blood Omen which had been made inaccessible before release, but which was still present in the game's data files.

This area is the HMCS Bitter[1] - a pirate ship named for its captain, for whom a tavern in Vasserbunde is also named. This tavern (Capt'n Bitter's Sudz) is the key to accessing the Bitter. There is a secret back entrance to the building, which can only be used if a walk-through-walls cheat is in use[2].

The town of Vasserbunde is the location of Capt'n Bitter's Sudz. The secret back entrance (accessible only via a walk-through-walls cheat) leads to a time-streaming device.

The back entrance leads to a small room with a time-streaming device. Using this will transport the player to the deck of the Bitter. There are many Hearts of Darkness here, as well as members of the pirate crew who will defend the ship.

One of the teleporters on the deck of the Bitter will transport the player to what appears to be a destroyed version of the same vessel - or possibly a second pirate ship which was sunk by the Bitter. This map is larger than the first, and includes a shoreline where pirates are preparing to bury their treasure chests.

It is currently unknown what prompted the HMCS Bitter to be redacted from Blood Omen before release.

In what is either a strange coincidence or a very obscure in-joke by and for Crystal Dynamics staff who were aware of this deleted area, Divine Shadow points out that Soul Reaver contains a single ship which is anchored in roughly the same part of the world map as Capt'n Bitter's Sudz occupies in Blood Omen (northwest of the Pillars of Nosgoth in both cases).

Footnotes
1. As Rusminin points out in the original post to the Eidos forums which revealed this secret, "HMCS" stands for "Her Majesty's Canadian Ship" - a nod to Silicon Knights' home country.
2. The Blood Omen Trainer can be used on the PC (or alternately, load the saved game which can be downloaded at the end of this article). Playstation gamers with a cheat device can use the codes in the Codes (Playstation Cheat Device) article. There is not currently a way to access this area from the game while running on a Playstation 3 (whether the game was bought online or is being played off of a CD).
