Download Policy

Like the Privacy_Policy, the download policy for The Lost Worlds is simple:

Do not download the same file repeatedly.
Do not use download managers.
Do not use website-copying software.

This is provided freely to the community and does not generate any income. These simple rules are designed to prevent abuse - even unintentional abuse. Most download managers attempt to "speed up" downloads by downloading the same file multiple times simultaneously, making it look as though much more data is being transferred than actually is.

Using website-copying software guarantees that several hundred megabytes will be downloaded at once, and that copy of The Lost Worlds will be outdated the next time the site is updated. While I am flattered that anyone would think my site is worth preserving, it isn't going anywhere. If for some bizarre reason it ever needs to be retired, there will be a lengthy advance notice and a means provided of downloading the site in a more compact format.

Because of a small minority of visitors who would not obey the rules before the overhaul in 2007, the new version of The Lost Worlds incorporates an automated protection system against the most frequent types of abuse. The most visible element of this system is the new download mechanism. Repeatedly downloading a file will eventually result in a temporary block on downloading any file from the site. If one block is not a sufficient deterrent, each successive block will be of an increasing length.

Obvious abuse of the site will lead to a total ban on access for the problem visitor. The list of banned users was reset during the 2007 overhaul, but this should not be taken as a license to resume abusing The Lost Worlds.
