SECTION 1.3 (RAZIEL)

“To Find the Heart, Just One More Question Sir”

EXT. SARAFAN STRONGHOLD – IN THE LAKE

RAZIEL having recovered his ability to enter the material realm, swims out of the violently shaking Spirit Shrine. Behind him, as he swims to the surface, the support pillars holding the roof tumble and the ancient structure collapses to rubble.

EXT. SARAFAN STRONGHOLD – SURFACE OF THE LAKE

RAZIEL thrusts up, out of the water and grabs the rocky cliff near to the high balcony of the Sarafan Stronghold. Pulling himself up, he gets on to the balcony and opens the great doors to enter the cathedral-like building.

Over his shoulder, in the distance, he does not see the unconscious Sluagh waking up on the beach.

INT. SARAFAN STRONGHOLD – CORRIDORS

RAZIEL is careful this time. Wanting to just obtain the Heart of Darkness and leave without incident, he sneaks around trying to not get anyone’s attention. He opens and closes doors quietly, and keeps into the shadows.

He hears murmurs of conversation coming from a chamber ahead, and enters discretely.

INT. SARAFAN STRONGHOLD – CENTAL CHAPEL HOUSE

RAZIEL enters the chamber through the upper doors, and looks down into the lower portion of the circular room. In the middle of the symbol of the snake eating its own tale, he can see the corpse of his former self, his frozen features pale and terrified. The lower doors open and two men walk in, humans.

MORTANIUS
Oh no, not another one. Raziel? Yes, its Raziel, he’s gone too

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO
Oh I'm sorry sir. Are you sure he is dead though sir?

MORTANIUS
I’m a bit of an expert on the subject, Lieutenant, and I can assure you he is indeed. It is such a dark, dark day.

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO reaches into his brown mac and pulls out a grubby notepad and pencil. MORTANIUS kneels down and uses his bony fingers to gently close SARAFAN RAZIEL’S eyelids.

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO
So sir, that’s, what is it now, twelve murders..?

MORTANIUS stands up, and brushes dust off his cloak.

MORTANIUS
Yes, up to twelve now. Six Guardians, and six Sarafan Sorcerer Priests.

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO
I'm sorry, I have to ask you, sir, where...

MORTANIUS
I understand Lieutenant. I was at home, with the wife.

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO
And will she give a police statement confirming that?

MORTANIUS
Yes.

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO
Okay sir, I’ll have to check up on that, you understand. Were there any witnesses, any at all?

MORTANIUS
A few men and women describe a blue creature loitering outside the stronghold, some claim he actually entered.

COLUMBO notes it down.

MORTANIUS
And the only real witness to the attack is still unconscious, I’m afraid. Malek of the Sarafan, he survived. Though when I’m through with him he’ll wish he hadn’t.

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO
Well sir, that would of course be a matter for internal security and discipline, I wouldn’t want to get in the way of course.

MORTANIUS
Good. Lieutenant, the reason I asked for you specifically is because you’re the best...

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO
Oh sir, I wouldn’t say that, I just do my job, put the pieces together...

MORTANIUS
Don’t be modest, I don’t hold with it. I just want the killer caught Lieutenant, whoever he is, he must be held accountable for this crime of all crimes.

The lower door opens and a few Sarafan Guards walk in, in the middle of them limps the shamed MALEK.

SARAFAN GUARD
My lord, he woke only a few seconds ago. We brought him to you as you ordered.

MORTANIUS looks from the guard to MALEK.

MORTANIUS
Explain. Explain yourself, and explain where you were when THEY needed you. Now!

MALEK sighs.

MALEK
Lord Mortanius, I have failed...

MORTANIUS
THAT we know!
All of you, you Sarafan Sorcerer Priests, all of you have failed! I might have expected this from Raziel and his subordinates; they were always a little careless in starting battles against the unknown.
But you Malek, you!?

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO
Sirs, perhaps I should leave you to...

MORTANIUS
Nonsense Lieutenant, Malek may have some information you can use. Paladin, we’re waiting. You will tell us where the hell you were.

MALEK sighs again.

MALEK
Okay.
I was in room with Moebius, where we stopped to talk to Raziel.

MORTANIUS pauses.

MORTANIUS
Raziel? How...
With... With our now dead Sarafan Raziel?

MALEK
No. ANOTHER Raziel. He was blue, you see, blue and had no pants. He was undead. Not the dead Raziel, the blue one.....
And he had a glowy sword on his arm. And BIG white eyes...... And three fingers on each hand. And no mouth. And he spoke to us with Raziel's voice. The Raziel he killed.....
You see, Raziel killed Raziel..... but one didn't have any pants on... you do understand, don't you... why are you looking at me like that....?

The lower door opens and MOEBIUS walks in, looking very sad.

MOEBIUS
What a dark, dark, horrid, horrid day.

MORTANIUS
Aye, Moebius. How are you?

MOEBIUS
(exaggerated)

Absolutely, absolutely distraught my friend. I fear that I shall never ever stop mourning.

MORTANIUS
(not quite believing him)

Yes, quite. Moebius, Malek in his explanation of what happened, as well as gratuitously using the word ‘pants’, for which he will pay penance later, he declared that... you were with him when he was meant to be protecting our comrades.

MOEBIUS looks at MALEK.

MOEBIUS
For shame!! Spreading lies to try and reduce the blame, to reduce the responsibility for HIS failure!

MOEBIUS closes his eyes and reopens them to regain his composure.

MOEBIUS
Malek, I am saddened by this.

MALEK
But Lord Moebius!?

MORTANIUS
Oh, be silent Malek.

MALEK looks at the floor.

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO
Mr Moebius sir, I have to ask, where were you during the murders?

MOEBIUS
I understand completely Lieutenant.
I was at Willendorf Orphanage, giving presents to Orphans!
I was giving them pet kittens, which needed a new home, and I was singing them songs to increase their morale.
It is a voluntary task, but if I don’t help those poor children, who will?!

Moebius stares at the Lieutenant with those puppy-dog-I-can-do-no-wrong-eyes. The lieutenant scribbles the alibi onto his pad.

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO
Okay sirs, I think I have what I need so far. I’d like to have a look around the murder scenes though, if that won’t be a problem sirs?

MORTANIUS
No, not at all. If you need anything, anything, I will help you in any way I can.

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO
Thank you sirs, sirs. I’ll try to keep out of your way...

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO makes his way to the lower exit.

He stops, turns around, and taps the side of his forehead with the palm of his right hand.

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO
Sir, Mr Moebius sir, I’m sorry, I should have mentioned, there is just one more thing...

MOEBIUS smiles politely.

MOEBIUS
Anything.

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO
Yes sir, you are the guardian of the Time Pillar...

MOEBIUS
I prefer ‘Pillar of Time’ but yes.

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO
And you are therefore capable of going any when you like. So, if you’ll forgive me sir, there could be two of you in the same time period, at the same time. One at the orphanage and...

MOEBIUS’S smile stays completely frozen but in his eyes change ever-so-slightly, as if this question has taken him completely and totally by surprise, something the time-streamer didn't foresee.

MOEBIUS
(carefully)

What are you insinuating, Lieutenant?

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO
Nothing sir, nothing, just asking little bits and pieces to go into the report, that’s all. Thank you sirs for your time, I’ll be going to have a look around.

LIEUTENANT COLUMBO leaves the chapel house of the stronghold.
